One thing you can't travel without?

Moccasins. Either a pair made by an Indigenous artist or anything by Manitobah Mukluks. I am always looking for ways to be comfortable and share who I am, and wearing moccasins can often lead to meaningful dialogue.

Destination at the top of your bucket list?

New Zealand. The movement towards language revitalization and cultural resilience is impressive. I always want to visit Indigenous communities doing the good work.

Do you have any travel rituals or habits?

I try to rise with the sun and move my body. Yoga is an easy travel companion that way and sometimes leads to meeting new people.

Most memorable travel experience?

Being in the high arctic of Canada changed my life. My Inuit brothers and sisters are connected to the land unlike anywhere else in the world. They survive in the coldest places with the warmest hearts. I hope these places continue to exist, with people able to live there traditionally.

Favourite destination?

I lost my heart in Hawai’i. I was fortunate to witness a volcano eruption. What struck me most were the stories that came from the Hawaiian people. To them, lava flowing from a volcano is part of their creation story. I felt incredibly grounded to be surrounded by their community and learn their beliefs and practices. People go to Hawai’i for its incredible beauty and Aloha spirit, but people stay because of the locals, the stewards of the land, and the Hawaiian kingdom.

Where is the coolest place in Canada to visit?

Lake Superior, my homelands and the ocean of lakes. She is mighty. Old Woman’s Bay is a particular highlight.

Tell us about your recent trip to Australia with the TreadRight Foundation

As a partner of the TreadRight Foundation, I was sent to learn about an amazing new cross-cultural arts program with the KARI Foundation that offers travellers (on a Trafalgar or Contiki itinerary visiting Sydney) an authentic Aboriginal experience. Visitors can join a dot-painting boomerang class led by Indigenous artists, while learning about the symbolism entwined in Aboriginal culture. Through this program, TreadRight is helping to secure economic freedom for Aboriginal people and to support the revitalization of Aboriginal culture.
