Rob meets with the owner each spring to discuss their vision, and the intensive work begins. The landscapers prepare the new soil with top dressing and a sprinkle of lime, and then the gardeners begin the planting, perking up the gardens with approximately 1,500 annuals from the Bala Garden Centre to add instant colour.
Kristan and Rob’s team tend a salad garden on the upper level; and an assortment of herbs by the kitchen door lets the owners infuse fresh flavour into the cuisine. The cultivated garden beds that surround the cottage surrender to a glorious sense of wildness on the slopes that lead to the lake — although nature owes more of this splendour to the expert human touch than one might realize. At the shore, art and function prevail, with flagstone patios, planters, and sculptures.
In addition to creative planting and professional soil preparation, consistent irrigation is the key to the health of the landscape; therefore, the entire property is dotted with inset sprinklers. Weekly maintenance includes hand-weeding, additional plantings throughout the summer, and ensuring the varied perennial species are in top form. Autumn is the time to separate overgrowth and prepare the gardens for their winter hibernation.
