HIDEAWAYS catches a wave with Muskoka’s own, MasterCraft Brand Ambassador, Noah Korhonen of Maple Leaf Marinas.

Join us as we explore the finer points of the boating Industry’s Leading Wakes and Waves.

Noah Korhonen knows the waters of Muskoka’s big lakes.

Since the age of 15, when he landed a summer job at Walkers Point Marina, he’s been traveling the lakes for service and sales, “driving literally everything under the sun.” Now Maple Leaf Marinas Regional Sales Manager for Southern Muskoka, Noah knows a thing or two about the factors that go into making a quality wake or ski boat. On the basis of four very important variables,” NOAH says, “you just can’t beat the Mastercraft line.

1. Wakes and Waves

Not all wakes and waves are created equal.

The quality of the surfing experience depends on a few factors, including the characteristics of the wake and the ability level of the surfer. Size, steepness, symmetry, and the amount of push in a wake all contribute to a clean, consistent riding face. “One of the advantages MasterCraft boats have,” says Noah, “is the SurfStar system, which is an easy-to-use interface where boaters can dial in any adjustments they’d like to see to the wake in real time, from growing the wave to switching it from right to left, or just aligning it to your surfer’s experience level.”

“Each wake-generating Mastercraft Surf System is specifically designed for the exact model it’s outfitted to, and re-engineered when new models are released.”

2. Comfort Zone

Comfort is key, regardless of whether a boat is being used for hours of surfing and skiing fun or to take a family trip around the lake on a sunny afternoon. What looks great and feels fine for a quick jaunt might become uncomfortable over the long haul. With that in mind, MasterCraft seats are spacious and engineered for ergonomics, and features such as triple-density foam and CoolFeel vinyl are designed to ensure that a boat outing never needs to be cut short because people just can’t get comfortable.

There are other kinds of discomfort, too. “Sometimes a customer with a powerful sport boat will tell me they love the boat, but hate docking it,” says Noah.

The physical attributes that make a boat great for water sports also tend to make it less manoeuvrable at low speeds. To address this, MasterCraft introduced the innovative DockStar Handling System. By adding two rudders in front of the propeller, the system improves manoeuvrability significantly, making it easier to move into tight spots like docks and marinas.

3. Leading Technology

Advances in technology have revolutionized the boating industry, delivering on performance metrics and tools of convenience. But staying ahead of the curve is important. MasterCraft invests heavily in research and development, so that each new model benefits from the advantages of cutting-edge technology. “Starting last year, every MasterCraft was equipped with a Telematics Connect app,” says Noah. From tracking their boat’s location to monitoring fuel levels and remotely controlling important systems like the battery switch, the app makes it easier for boat owners to monitor and maintain their equipment. “Even a relatively simple thing like being able to switch your boat’s battery off from the city after you’ve driven home is a really big win for people,” says Noah. “There’s a thoughtfulness there that people appreciate.”

MasterCraft was also the first boat manufacturer to implement foil profiles into their SurfStar System. Anticipating that wake foiling would grow in popularity, they decided to add the profiles so that people wouldn’t need to have their systems upgraded or trade in their boats in order to participate. As with the wake and wave settings, foil profiles can be dialled in through the SurfStar System in real time.

4. The Quality Advantage

A boat is a big investment. So, it’s important to feel confident that you’re spending your money wisely. “That’s probably where MasterCraft shines brightest,” says Noah. “It’s been a company feature since the beginning to only put the MasterCraft name on boats that are built for longevity and performance.” From hull construction to upholstery installation and gel coat thickness, MasterCraft goes above and beyond to deliver craftsmanship and the highest quality in all aspects of its products—all in the name of reliability. “The bottom line is, you come down to the boathouse, you turn that key, it fires up, and everything works perfectly,” says Noah.

Any of Maple Leaf Marinas’ 20 marinas can facilitate the sale of a MasterCraft boat. Maple Leaf Marinas carries stock in MasterCraft boats, and for those interested in personalization, MasterCraft has hands-down the most customization of any boat on the market.

For HIDEAWAYS readers, the most convenient locations to inquire about MasterCraft products are Walkers Point Marina, Port Sandfield Marina, and Huntsville Marine.
