It is no coincidence that Muskoka, with its celebrated scenic landscape, is a Canadian version of Mecca for artists: the setting serves as both respite and inspiration, providing a wealth of subjects for those who respect the splendour of nature. And so it is a logical consequence that there is no lack of high-quality art shows, galleries, and studio tours here, each offering unique shopping experiences.
Dockside Festival of the Arts has showcased the work of some of Canada’s finest artisans and craftspeople for over two decades; and, once again, the special events field at Gravenhurst’s Muskoka Wharf will be enlivened from August 15th to 17th with great art, superb food, and lively entertainment. Over 100 talented artists will show their original, handmade products — from wood and glass creations to jewellery; metal sculptures to chainsaw carvings; paintings to granite stones; and candles and soaps to clothing and toys.
It is always a good time for family fun, with a splash pad for the kids, lots of prizes, and live entertainment all weekend long. Sawdust City Brewing Company will be hosting a craft beer tent, while Wine Country Ontario offers samples of Ontario wine. Smoothies are available at Juice Monkey; and, with the support of Foodland, healthy and organic food is on the menu this year, too.
Dockside’s organizers are really excited about the high calibre of musicians taking part in the Festival this year. ‘The Lost Fingers’ is a gypsy jazz band from Montreal, taking their name for the noted gypsy jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt, who overcame the early loss of the use of two fingers by developing a unique method to play the guitar. A lively ensemble mixing the timbres of double bass, guitar, and vocals, they have been nominated for two Juno awards. Their albums have been released in over eight countries, including the U.S.A., Belgium, France, Mexico, Switzerland, and Spain. The group brings incredible energy, humour, talent, and personality to their performances.
Dockside Festival 2014 is always pleased to welcome back many of its returning artists, as well as introducing some interesting new vendors. Topped off with great food and fabulous music, it is an experience not to be missed. CCH
