Here are some tips for getting your property ready to welcome the warm weather:
1. Deal with winter’s little surprises:
If you are fortunate enough to enjoy your cottage year-round, one downfall may be the condition of your driveway and lawn after the snow removal all season. Tidying gravel and sand, repairing damaged areas to sod, blowing leaves and debris are all best done in the spring.
2. Let’s get green:
Once spring thaw has occurred, make sure your lawn is dry enough to begin dethatching, topdressing and seeding, repairing mole damage, fertilizing and finally checking for drainage issues. This is also the perfect time to inspect irrigation heads for any damages that may have occurred over the winter.
3. Remember that healthy roots mean healthy shoots:
Cultivating and amending the soil in your garden promotes healthy aeration. Adding triple mix, fertilizer and compost to your garden allows the proper nutrients to be restored into the soil. Adding a layer of mulch will help to stay on top of weed growth and retain moisture for the season. Keep in mind your plans for any annual, perennial and shrub plantings.
4. Don’t forget to look up:
Limbs may be hanging from winter storms or from heavy snow load: pruning will alleviate any potential hazards. Spring is the best time to do structural pruning to trees and shrubs for shape, form, and overall plant health.
5. Set your sights on the lake, patio, deck, dock and BBQ:
Freshen up your property for the summer season ahead by blowing, sweeping and tidying your outdoor living areas. Pressure-wash any decks, docks and stairs that may be slippery from mildew and moss. Clean out the eavestroughs and ensure that downspouts are free of debris and are draining properly.
