Sailing, Swimming & Lifelong Friendship

By Steve Phillips, Commodore South Muskoka Sailing Club

My family started to spend our summers at our Muskoka cottage decades ago when I was an energetic kid looking for activities. I tried sailing and I absolutely loved it. Sailing has become a lifelong passion of mine and our entire family continues to be part of this wonderful community.

Today, sailing can still be the key to enjoying Muskoka family life. The South Muskoka Sailing Club (SMSC) has been teaching sailors at all levels and creating a family community around the spirit of sailing for 53 years.

During July and August, kids gather at the club each morning to learn to sail. This crew of kids, starting as early as age 6, meet new friends, enjoy fun games, and learn the skills of small boat sailing. To ensure that kids are comfortable around the water, the club also offers swimming lessons, taught by National Lifesaving Society– certified swim instructors.

Many of the students become very engaged in the sport of sailing, participating in several sailboat regattas, where they experience the excitement of racing. Some of these skilled sailors progress and become trained and certified by Sail Canada as sailing instructors teaching the next generation of kids to love the sport.

Of course, the grown-ups are an important part of the Club. It is a great place to meet families, join in on social events, volunteer in a wide range of roles to support the Club, or even learn to sail yourself. For parents that are experienced sailors, there are a variety of races, ranging from family fun races to more competitive races in a range of fleets at the Club or around the lake.

Safety is the top priority at the Club, and we follow Sail Canada and Ontario Sailing School guidelines, policies, and procedures.

The South Muskoka Sailing Club is located on McVittie Island on Lake Muskoka, near the mouth of the Muskoka River. Students can arrive by boat or be dropped off and picked up at the George Road Public Boat Launch in Bracebridge.
