A Love Letter to Africville

In this sumptuous collection of photos and history, Amanda Carvery-Taylor celebrates Africville, the vibrant African-Canadian village located north of Halifax, Nova Scotia, that was founded in the mid-19th century and demolished by the City of Halifax in the 1960s. As the title suggests, Carvery-Taylor’s focus is on the joy and fellowship of the community, something she learned about by watching her father interact with other former residents—despite the fact that her formal schooling focussed on negative stereotypes of Africville. Though inevitably tinged with loss, this important work is a delightful tribute and a rightly proud look at a little-known page in Canadian history.
Bad Dog

In Bad Dog, writer and illustrator Mike Boldt tells a story about a little girl with only one thing on her birthday wish list: a dog. When her wish comes true, however, the little girl finds her new dog, Rocky, doesn’t behave like she expected. She doesn’t come when she’s called, walk on a leash, or want to play with other dogs. Even worse, she is constantly cleaning herself and climbing trees. Try as she might, the little girl just can’t get Rocky to do dog things, but she does appreciate that Rocky loves to sleep in the sun and cuddle up in her lap, and she finally decides that while she might just be a bad dog, Rocky’s a pretty great cat.
