Nestled in a private, exclusive neighbourhood on one of Muskoka’s largest lakes, a new, custom-built retreat epitomizes the seamless blend of rustic charm and modern luxury. Behind its awe-inspiring design and unparalleled craftsmanship stands Millwheel Contracting Limited (MCL). The project was constructed in concert with Muskoka Custom Carpentry. MCL served as the project’s primary builder and general contractor and was responsible for bringing this undeniably compelling project to life, along with CHAPO DESIGN Inc., the visionary interior design firm led by principal and owner Boris Mathias.
A multi-year endeavour, the property boasts a main cottage spanning over 8,000 square feet across two levels, featuring five bedrooms and six opulent bathrooms, along with a stunning two-storey, three-slip boathouse with expansive living space above.
The property’s wide frontage allows for sweeping views of the lake and lush surroundings while offering a level of privacy rarely found in such exclusive locales. The main cottage is designed to be a sublime sanctuary for the client, with every room custom-crafted to provide not only beauty but functionality. Every element offers a moment of respite—carefully curated by CHAPO DESIGN to blend the home’s natural surroundings with understated sophistication and warmth.
This impressive project came to MCL through a long-standing relationship with Muskoka construction icon Greg Colman, known for his hallmark properties on the big lakes. Colman’s reputation for excellence and expertise in exclusive construction made him an invaluable partner in bringing the project to life.
“The vision for this retreat was ambitious, but with the right team, we knew we could deliver something extraordinary,” reflects Mike Jennings, senior vice president and lead project manager with MCL. “MCL’s role as general contractor was to coordinate and execute the vast array of complex logistics. We worked hard to ensure that the collective visions of the client, architect, and designer were all executed with exacting precision and care.”
A pivotal contributor to this vision was CHAPO DESIGN Inc., whose approach to interior architecture shaped the home’s soul. “From the moment we engaged with the project to the final touches, our team worked tirelessly to bring every interior element to life,” says Boris Mathias. “It was important to us to design a home that doesn’t just sit in the landscape but belongs to it—an interior that breathes Muskoka’s natural energy through custom detailing, rich textures, and a deep respect for materiality.”
Every detail—from custom white oak millwork to artisanal finishes—was guided by CHAPO DESIGN’s thoughtful design process, bringing together luxury and livability in every corner of the home. A close collaboration with the homeowners ensured the result felt both deeply personal and perfectly attuned to their aesthetic and practical needs. This design vision was brought to life through the expert craftsmanship of MCL Custom Builders, whose precise execution elevated every element. The result is a modern-day Muskoka retreat that balances refined comfort, exceptional quality, and character—a place where every room tells a story.
